Position Summary

The Cultural Heritage and Archaeology Research Group (CHARG) is hiring a Cultural Heritage Projects Assistant to support work during the summer to support ongoing research projects. These projects are all community engaged heritage projects that incorporate historical research, online database creation, Geographic Information Systems and mapping, and fieldwork. They are associated with African American and descendant communities in Winston-Salem and Wake Forest, North Carolina; Mobile, Alabama; and Orange, Virginia.

The Projects Assistant will support undergraduate researchers and interns, and work with the Director of CHARG to ensure projects are carried out according to proper methods and within the vision of the stakeholder groups, and happen on time. The Projects Assistant will receive necessary training in the digital heritage tools being used, and will be expected to gain expertise in some of these tools so they can instruct and support student researchers. These tools include ESRI ArcGIS, Omeka, and 3D modeling software. The Project Assistant may also step in to help lead or direct teams on documentation fieldwork projects at local cemeteries.

Position Details

  • The position pays $15/hour
  • The position requires 10-20 hours of work per week
  • The position is for 10 months (September to June)

Requirements and Expectations

CHARGE seeks to create a Community of Practice and due to the nature of field work, the PA is expected  to work in-person unless other circumstances arise. Some outdoor fieldwork may be necessary, including lifting, carrying, digging, squatting, and working in overgrown areas.

Responsibilities

  • Support  undergraduate student researchers and interns.
  • Manage and build Omeka databases, ArcGIS Maps, and 3D Models.
  • Help manage ongoing projects using Agile project management methods.
  • Support fieldwork documentation efforts.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Ability to conduct self-guided and collaborative work with fellow researchers and staff, stakeholders, and partners.
  • Attention to detail, willingness to make mistakes and eagerness to solve problems.
  • Enthusiasm for learning, teaching, mutual respect, and community.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in a field related to the position.
  • Able to participate in physical activity.
  • Experience in Geographic Information Systems, Omeka, databases, or 3D modeling encouraged.
  • Must be a graduate student at Wake Forest University.
