The Cultural Heritage and Archaeology Research Group (CHARG) is hiring a group of undergraduate students to work during fall 2024 and spring 2025 semesters on archaeological and cultural heritagel research projects relating to historical archaeology, cemetery documentation, mapping, and African American history. Researchers will gain training and experience in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), 3D modeling, aerial photography, and archaeological documentation and field methods by working on a number of different projects associated with community partners in North Carolina, Virginia, and Alabama. Students interested in history, archaeology, anthropology, preservation, African American studies, and related topics are encouraged to apply. Additionally, these positions are available to students from all Universities and Colleges in the Winston-Salem area.

Future Opportunities

Students who accept this position and perform at an exceptional level will also have the opportunity to apply for and attend the Montpelier Archaeology Field School in June of 2025, have the chance to work as an intern for an extra month at Montpelier, and then return to Winston-Salem in the Fall of 2025 with a research project to work on with guidance from CHARG.

Learning Goals

  • Build experience and expertise in Archaeological methods, including field methods, laboratory techniques, public archaeology, and digital applications.
  • Learn how archaeological methods are critical to understanding African American history.
  • Develop experience in ESRI ArcGIS, particularly in building geodatabases, ArcGIS Online, Experience Builder, Field Maps, and StoryMaps.
  • Work as part of a Community of Practice, developing experience in team based work environments and familiarity with Agile Project Management skills.
  • Build a comprehensive understanding of how archaeology and cultural heritage organizations intersect, and the ways that community-focused public archaeology is conducted.
  • Attend and present at a professional academic conference.
  • Build preparation for employment or graduate school in careers in archaeology, cultural heritage, museums, and history.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Availability for 9 hours a week, including at least one hour Monday afternoons for in-class work.
  • Ability to conduct self-guided and collaborative work with fellow researchers and staff, stakeholders, and partners.
  • Attention to detail, willingness to make mistakes and eagerness to solve problems.
  • Enthusiasm for learning, teaching, mutual respect, and community.
  • Availability from August 18-23rd for Montpelier Training Program. Willingness to carry out rigorous, physical archeological field and laboratory work.
  • Interest in archaeology, history, cultural heritage, preservation, museums, history, political science, digital humanities, geography, geographic information systems, and/or African American studies.
  • Currently enrolled student at a Forsyth County institution of higher education, including but not limited to Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem State University, Salem College, or UNC School of the Arts. Rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors of any discipline are encouraged to apply.
