Need-Based Federal Work-Study Employment
The federal work study placement process begins in June for the upcoming academic year. Positions are limited and jobs are assigned on a first come first serve basis according to the date the Job Preference form is received in the Financial Aid office. Students work an average of 10 hours per week, depending on their availability and the department’s need for assistance. Students are paid an hourly pay rate of $7.25 or more. Each department determines the pay scale for their student employees. Earnings are paid bi-weekly directly to students.
The Federal Work-Study (FWS) program provides job opportunities for students who demonstrate financial need. FWS eligibility is determined by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and is awarded as part of the student’s financial aid package. Earnings are paid directly to the student each month as work is performed; therefore, Federal Work Study awards are not subtracted from charges in the Office of Financial and Accounting Services.
The Office of Student Financial Aid coordinates all need-based Federal Work-Study employment opportunities. Placement may be on-campus or in non-profit agencies within the Winston-Salem area through the Community Service and America Reads and Counts programs.
Students receiving work study should complete the Job Preference form, which will become available mid June. There will be a form to complete in the financial aid portal. A notification will be sent to all students eligible for federal work study once the form is available for completion. Job assignments and additional information will be e-mailed directly to the student using their Wake Forest University e-mail address in late July.
Resources and forms
Students are encouraged to have their pay directly deposited into their bank account(s). The WFU Payroll Office can deposit earnings into any U.S. bank or financial institution. Forms and instructions are available through Student Financial Services Direct Deposit site.
Students who elect not to take advantage of direct deposit and instead receive paper paychecks will have their checks mailed directly to their primary home address. Please note: The primary home address is your permanent address. Checks will no longer be placed in student’s on-campus post office box.
